Of Gods and Men: Film screening with introduction

Come and watch Of Gods and Men (Des hommes et des dieux, dir. Xavier Beauvois), a critically acclaimed French drama and winner of the 2010 Cannes Grand Prix, in the unique environment of Oxford's only independent cinema, the Ultimate Picture Palace.
The film tells the true story of a group of monks whose longstanding, peaceful presence in an Algerian community eventually led to their murder amid rising tensions in the civil war of the late 1990s. It asks searching questions about faith and doubt, courage and cowardice, and peace in an increasingly angry world.
Dr Jonathan Brant (Wycliffe Hall), a scholar of ethics in film, will introduce the film for us. We invite you to come and consider what it has to say to us now. Everyone is welcome, whatever your discipline or philosophical or faith commitment.
