New Men by Sam Cox: A film showing and discussion.

7:30pm-9:00pm, Thursday 28th May 2020

New Men by Sam Cox: A film showing and discussion.

The film New Men chronicles one year in the life of a Russian Orthodox monastery in rural West Virginia. The monks' reflections on shedding former identities to embrace new lives of prayerful asceticism are woven together with rarely seen moments of the community’s 1,700-year-old monastic tradition. As the brotherhood prepares for Pascha, the most important Orthodox holiday, Father Justin contemplates his upcoming final vows to live in the monastery until his death.

Panel discussion: We all find ourselves living quasi-monastic lives in this time of social isolation, but many of us don’t know how to find the living presence of God in quarantine. For many of us, the world in which we had imagined our futures has changed dramatically and perhaps permanently. What can we learn from these ancient-but-modern monastics about seeking and creatively serving Christ in the time of coronavirus and beyond? Join us after the film as we explore these themes with Sam Cox (the documentarian), Fr. Gabriel (from the monastery) and Kosta Milkov (from RZIM). Mari Ovsepyan will be the panel moderator.
