Joe Martin talks to the Oxford Pastorate Associates about his life, vocation and ministry to students in Oxford.

Long before the work of the Oxford Pastorate was re-focused towards postgraduate ministry, Joe was influential in the founding of Oxford’s Graduate Christian Forum in 1994, and in faithfully ministering to graduate students at both St Aldate’s and St Ebbe’s Churches. In a tribute to Joe on the occasion of his 80th birthday, Revd Vaughan Roberts noted that ‘all that has happened [in the proliferation of ministry to postgraduates in Oxford] in the last few years has been built on a platform significantly built by Joe.’

It was a delight therefore to have Joe come and speak as the special guest at a dinner for participants in the Pastorate Associates programme. In this recording of that talk, he tells his life story to date, beginning in Little Rock, Arkansas, before continuing through Harvard, Swiss L’Abri, London and Oxford.
