Book launch for Sarah C. Williams, 'When Courage Calls'

Friend of the Pastorate Sarah C. Williams, Research Professor at Regent College, Vancouver, was guest of honour at the launch for her new book When Courage Calls: Josephine Butler and the Radical Pursuit of Justice for Women on the 28th October. Wycliffe Hall hosted a packed event where Pastorate Chaplain Bethan Willis interviewed Sarah about her process of writing a book she didn't expect to write - not an academic monograph about Butler but a popular-level biography about this nearly forgotten Christian feminist.

Sarah shared with us about Butler's vision of prayer as a radical, powerful tool in social activism, and the long-term political campaign that arose from her commitment to championing the voices of women cast aside by society. She reflected on the challenge that Butler's life offers us to pursue contemplation as the essential tool for action.
